Thread - the release
On Monday July 14th 2008, the CD "Thread" was released in the UK and Europe. It will subsequently be released in the USA and Japan, but this was the British release date.
It is an album that has been "on its way" for a long time - even though the recording of it happened incredibly fast. In fact much of the album was pretty well recorded in real time. I revisited the original tapes (well...digital files actually) and 90% of our recording session appears either on this album or the Double Talk CD. The complete recording session was on January 5th 2007 (and in fact over in time for afternoon tea...). Some of the results were then used on the Double Talk album, but the rest - over an hour of music, appears for the first time on this album.
In many ways it represents a completion of a particular journey for me. I hope the beginning of a new one also, but the completion of a journey. I started experimenting with live looping and processing the sound of my alto flute in live performance in early 2002 - actually at the house of my friend the guitarist John Etheridge who had various footpedals he used on gigs. Immediately I was transfixed by the sound - it was as if this was a sound and a performance technique I had been looking for for 20 years - probably since I first fell in love with those Brian Eno Ambient albums "On Land" and "Music for Airports" when I was a young and impressionable teenager.
A few weeks after buying my sound processing pedals, I recorded the Slow Life CD using just the alto flute and what I dubbed my "system of ambitronics" and have been experimenting in this musical area in as many contexts as possible ever since - solo, on my quartet gigs, in Cipher, with the excellent Steve Lawson who is so experienced and advanced in this musical world, and more recently with Soft Machine Legacy, David Sylvian and now Robert Fripp. Robert is of course the master at this area of music, pretty well inventing it with Brian Eno back in the early 1970s. It is for me an honour and a privilege to have recorded this album with him, and to have received praise from him and to have spent time with him enjoyng his company and discussing music and life.
The release of the album was celebrated by us having coffee and cakes at Robert's home in Worcestershire. We ate, drank, chatted and walked to the river. Not very rock 'n roll maybe - but hey - it was bloody great - and a very special day.
